How might we bring the common spice rack into the 21st century? Give it a brain.

Objective: Keeping in mind intelligent mobility, design something to be used in the home or kitchen that can be built in the present.

Stak features a modular design. Spices go inside a cartridge. Two cartridges can fit inside of one platter. The number of platters are determined by the user’s needs. Stak: on-the-fly spice blend creation from the basic spices you have in your pantry. Final models done in Solidworks and rendered with Keyshot.

Stak
Stak is an intelligent and modular spice rack.
Stak form ideation
Ideating the form of the spice rack. The helical shape was inspired by DNA, as spices make up the DNA of a meal.
Stak use case
Control your spice rack from your mobile device. Perfect when you're on your way to the kitchen or trying to think of meal options.
Stak mobile UI
Simple mockup of the mobile interface circa early 2011. A lot has changed and this UI would need a complete refresh.
Exploded view of platter
Some technical details of how the modular platter system might be constructed.
Exploded view of Stak
The modular nature of the spice rack allows for spice collections that are both large and small.
In the kitchen
It can come in a variety of colors.

What about revisting this project?

I think this concept is not as far out there as it was in 2011. The internet of things is a concept that gain momentum. Aside from the mechanical engineering challenges that would be present in making the device, there is a lot of refinement that can be put into the mobile application (as it was not the main focus of the project).
